Can I partition a HDD AND keep some stuff on it?

Can I partition a HDD AND keep some stuff on it?

Whilst fettling a new PC I am trying to transfer stored files from old to new.
A drive from the old has some stuff on it that I want but is going to go into old to enable me to sell it.
As it was just for bulk storage it has no OS.
If I put it in the old can I partition it to accept an OS which will allow me to transfer the files I want?
If I just put an OS on it then it will wipe the disc.
Can I partition AND keep the files?
I have access to a Hirens disc if that is any use, or can I partition from the BIOS?
Already I have tried putting the old disc in the new PC but, for some reason it did not work.
My theory is that, if I can hang an OS onto the drive then I could email myself much of the stuff.
Thank you and I am sorry to be high maintenance. :embarrassed:

Be very careful adding a new OS to a hdd w/ any files/folders on it you want to save, you could lose them all, I did on time... hard lesson, I think that was back in the XP (not modern) days.
You should be able to partition it to add a (modern) OS to it though. Just read every message before installing the OS (especially XP) to make sure it wont wipe everything.

Maybe use a external hdd to move the files around?
I did what you tried & transferred all my storage file to another (larger) hdd on my last PC rebuild. I do have a very powerful power supply (1,000w), that may be the problem on your first attempt.

Bless you shreader.
Please forgive me for the delay; installed and re-installed windows so many times yesterday that my machine was rarely useable.
The drive is my old storeage one from old machine.
Ideally I would just install drive into my new machine but when I tried it would not boot; then again my head was at popping point :-x
My new machine has a 150Gb with OS, Phew, and a 1Tb which be my new storage for files and cr@p: Ideally I take out the 150 and replace it temporarily with old storage HDD.
I could then do a clean install on 1Tb which lights the pc up and allows me to suck the files from old HDD.
Initially I was going to partition the 1Tb to allow an install before taking out and replacing 150Gb so, in theory it lights up immediately. I tried that yesterday but, for some reason, it did not work. :whistle
Take care shreader and thank you for seeing me through my breakdown
