Bootable External CD/DVD Rom Drive

Bootable External CD/DVD Rom Drive

Postby Knight Rider » Tue Jun 03, 2008 10:23 pm

Does anyone know of a external DVD or CD rom drive you can boot from. I have an old external HP DVD rom drive and I can't seem to boot from that.

Thanks

Do you have bootable USB enabled in BIOS. Some older BIOS you had to enable it.

Would that prevent the computer from POSTing if it was turned off. When my HP drive was plugged in it wouldn't post. I'll check the bootable USB tomorrow. I think it would be on though, the computer (IBM SurePOS 500) was manufactured in November 2007.

SurePOS (piece of ___?)

Hah had to throw that one out there. But yea, to boot to an external drive, it needs to be able to boot from USB (since that's how it's connected). It doesn't see it as a regular drive. But having the drive plugged in shouldn't stop it from posting... that sounds like a problem.

LOL Tyler. IBM is a pain in the rear to deal with sometimes. Especially with point of sale equiptment. Anyways, this is the system:

Put it this way, I could never boot from the HP DVD-ROM drive on my old Toshiba laptop either.

Well, maybe try using a different drive with a cheap IDE/SATA to USB adapter (actually had to do that today). If another drive works, maybe it's just something with the HP.

Thanks for your help guys. I went back yesterday, messed with some settings and tried a front USB port and the drive booted fine. XP and the drivers are installed and the systems working great.
