Bacon makes everything better - even chocolate?

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Here are three little words that might give the staunchest snacker pause:

It sounds so wrong. But it tastes just right, says Joseph Marini III, a fourth-generation candy maker who is selling the bacon bonbons at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk seaside amusement park.

"It's not just for breakfast anymore," he says with a grin.

And this isn't just a wacky West Coast thing.

This year, Famous Dave's at the Minnesota State Fair is rolling out Pig Lickers - dark chocolate-covered bacon pieces sprinkled with sea salt.

This actually sounds good depending on the ingredients, like they say sweet, smoky and salty. I might try something like this with some smoked slab bacon and dark chocolate. Hmm, another American 'diet food'!

Actually, here in Quebec we have maple syrup parties at sugar houses during the syrup runs and cooking pork in it in the spring so adding chocolate to bacon is not a big stretch for me, as long as it's not too sweet. There are also great Mexican 'moles' dishes but I haven't seen any sweet ones, just savoury.

I sure hope the onions are caramelized first and not raw!
