AOpen MB + AthlonXP = OC By Itself?

AOpen MB + AthlonXP = OC By Itself?

Postby kzt » Tue Apr 06, 2004 11:59 pm

I thought this was strange, so I decided to post it. Linux had reported to me that my Athlon XP 2500+ processor was a 3000+. Now, at the time, I was running 2.6.0-test9 so I thought, "Oh, someone screwed up a piece of detection code. No big deal, it'll get fixed." Well, that excuse was great until Windows started reporting it as well. So, I booted up my BIOS menu and lo and behold my AOpen AK79D-400 Max motherboard overclocked itself. How bizare is that? Can anyone think of a reason why that would occur?

What do you mean it overclocked itself? What settings in your BIOS were overclocking it?

The default settings for my processor are a 166 FSB with an 11x multiplier. When I checked my BIOS after noticing all of the 3000+ messages, I found the muliplier set to 13x.

Yes many mb's default settings are overclocked, I think they do it so the mbs look better on benchmarks.

So if you cook a CPU/motherboard is it the MB manufacturers fault?

The board had been running at the AMD spec since August '03 (when I built the system) up until about February or March of this year. The settings changed - without my input.

Well most of them are only overclocked a few percecent, I think some the Asus are three percent. Although it is always possible to return it.

Personally speaking all of mine came out of the box at spec or below. Are you sure no one else has access to your bios? if so this is a first on me.
