Compaq presario 4910 desktop.
cdrom doesnt seem to be working properly.
Reformatted pc, set bios to boot from cd rom first for win98, and it starts to install then says it cant find setup files.....I know the win 98 cd is good.Does anyone have any suggestions? I have all the drivers installed. And even tried a different cd rom to no avail yet. :confused

If you can boot to the CD...or a 98 boot disk with CD enabled....I'd just copy the Win98 directory of the CD to the hard drive...then run setup from that directory. This is what I do all the time...it runs faster than from CD and allows the OS to find the install files when they are needed later(when the user installs more hardware, etc.) as it won't ask for the CD...it's pointed tot he Win98 directory on the harddrive!

Just fdisk and format the C: drive... then MD C:\win98. Then go to the CD drive an cd win98. Then "copy *.* c:\win98" and wait a few minutes. The change tot he C drive CD to the Win98 directory and type "setup" and follow the bouncing ball!!

You might want to try a firewire or USB cd rom, also are you sure it isn't the prob with the cd?

Make sure that you clean it(the CD that is), I've had incidents where there would be errors...cleaned the CD(GENTLY!!!!) and then it worked just fine!

You can read a CD even if there are scratches and other things on the surface...it just takes longer. Thus, it works better to just "copy" than it is to setup from the CD...it'll try longer without timing out in a copy senerio.

There is also the off chance that your cable has gone bad...if you have an extra cable try replacing it...that has happened to me once and I tried several different attempts at getting the system to recognize the hard drive before I swapped out the cables..and then...wow...it worked...lol. Just a thought...is easy to try, just a few minutes, and wouldn't it be nice if that WAS the problem?
Good luck....

I recently had about the same problem with a cdrom drive that was less than six months old. After trying cables, drivers, sys restore, and anything else I could think of I installed a new 52x drive. I haven't had a problem since. :dontgetit
