administrator privilege required to run diagnostics error

Postby dontlikevista on Tue Jan 06, 2009 2:08 pm

Hello,

Please help. I cannot run diagnostics after Installing Bootloader as I keep getting an error message that I need to have administrative privelages even though I am running the program as administrator.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M305D-S4831 with VISTA Home Preium pre-installed. I have installed Windows XP Pro SP3 on a separate partition and want to dual boot. Of course, after installing XP I was no longer able to boot VISTA.

I have downloaded and installed VISTABootPRO v. 3.3 on my XP load. As per your instructions I did the following:
- On the System Bootloader Tab
1. Selected 'Windows VISTA Bootloader'
2. Selected 'All Drives'
3. Selected 'Install Bootloader' and got confirmation that it was succesfull.

- On the Diagnostics tab
1. I tried to run diagnostics but got a message that I required administrative privelages.
2. Closed VISTABootPro and Ran as administrator
3. When I went to run diagnostics I got the same erroro message, evenm though I was running the program
as administrator.

Thank You,
Steve Carr

If you have not created an account that needs you to sign in with a password that may be your problem.

Go to control Panel / users / your account / and add or create a password / you will probably need to reboot or logoff and sign back in with the new password

Steve,

What is your current language within Windows? Normally this error is caused by a communication problem with the language currently being used and VistaBootPRO.

Set a password for my account, which has administrator privelages, but unfortunately, it did not work.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Jason, the language is set to English - US. I was not able to find a configuration for the VISTABootPro language setting

Steve,

Just to make sure did you right click on VistaBootPRO.exe and click on 'Run As Administrator'? I have checked the code for this particular part and because your language is set to English there should be no problems when ran elevated.

Hi Jason,

Yes, indeed, I selected 'Run As' and then selected administrator.

Just curious, the XP I am trying to run is an image of an XP load that had previously run, standalone, on this laptop (i.e. I installed a replacement HDD, installed XP, then took an image. Could there be a difference in functionality depending on whether it is a fresh XP install vs. an image of an install ?

Also, my partition drive letters are asigned as follows:
C: VISTA OS
D: Data
E: XP OS
Is this OK or do VISTA and XP need to be on contiguous partitions ?

Thanks,
Steve

Actually if you could post the contents of VistaBootPRO -> View Settings -> All. I can figure out the problem. It almost seems like your BCD Registry doesn't exist. If that is the case the easiest method is to simply boot to the Vista DVD and do a Startup Repair.

Probably what happened is that when you swapped HDD's (XP) it contained the BCD Registry Store. If that happened then there are two ways to fix it (one mentioned above) and two is to manually type in the commands (which I can guide you through). :yesnod:

Hi Jason,

Unfortunately, because VISTA was pre-installed on the new laptop that I purchased, there is no VISTA disc, only the system recovery disk which wipes out the entire hard drive and restores the 'as-purchased' image, which does me absolutely no good as I have already spent quite a bit of time installing software, updates and drivers.

Therefore, if you wouldn't mind, I would really apreciate you walking me through the commands.

I will post the settings inof that you requested shortly.

Hi Jason,

I am just not having much luck here. Because I do not have a VISTA boot disk, the only method I have of recovering VISTA when it fails to boot is to restore the image, which takes an hour each time. I have been using Acronis Disk Director to dual boot between VISTA and XP.

I just recovered the VISTA image again and was planning to use the Acronis product to get inot XP so I could run VISTABootPRO and get that inof for you but now, for some reason, I can no longer access XP.

My plan now is to just do fresh install of Windows XP on its partition but I would like to be sure that any issues weith the BCD store are resolved so that VISTABootPRO works for me.

Therefore, could I trouble you for those instructions on fixing the BCD store manually ?

Thanks,
Steve
