55 whales beach and are killed in South Africa

It's tragic they had to shoot them

There's a naval base (Simons Town) not far from that beach, about 5 or 6 miles across the cape peninsular and probably about 30 miles by sea around Cape point from there. The naval fleet based there (including submarines) have often been criticized for using sonar and explosives detonations in the area of Simons Town, because it's a breeding ground for southern right whales.

This spot has arguably the worlds best left breaking wave (Kommetjie) on the left of the images when wind, tide and wave conditions are right. It's a long hollow wall breaking on a shallow reef and is still rideable at around 30 foot. The water is danged cold there throughout the year, being on the Atlantic side of the Cape peninsular. It's not very far (5 or 6 miles to the right of the images) from Dungeons where the annual Red Bull Big Wave Africa contest is usually held.

Likely the whales search for food and navigation is disrupted by humans, through the effects of: illness due to pollution; unprecedented habitat movement due to global warming; boating shipping and navy sonar disrupting navigation.Perhaps we disrupt the whales directly. Perhaps we disrupt them by disrupting their food. We are the cause of the problem; therefore we should rectify it. :-x
