13,000!

Postby Nolez on Fri Aug 05, 2005 12:40 am

Central Florida had 13,000 lightening strikes in a 3 hour period this evening. This seems to be an increasing thing here. I mean, Orlando is known for really bad lightening but it's getting worse each year! It reminds me of the really bad one we had a few years back when I was living in my old apartment.....here are some of the pics I was able to get back then....

Hi NolezXP, good to hear from ya. As I was reading your post I thought "did you get any pictures"...how funny.

Those are some pretty big lightning bolts. Stay indoors! Actually, didn't some boy scouts get hit by lightning recently and they were in-doors?!?

Yeah, I think so. I remember hearing something about that but don't remember the details.

The night those pictures were shot were amazing. We were watching Black Hawk Down with surround sound and the phone rang, so we paused the DVD and ot still sounded like bombs were going off and flashes were appearing through the blinds. We opened the blinds and there was this non stop display of lightening and sounds of thunder. It was crazy....the night sky was similar tonight when I was coming back from the store but it was too cloudy to see anything. Just flashes in the clouds from where we are at now.

I have only seen lightening like that once before and that was probably ten years ago. It kept striking up on a mountain was easily seen for many miles, it was pretty spectacular but I am sure it was nothing compared to what you get down there in Florida.

Thanks, I unfortunately don't think I will have the view that I had that one evening. We are on the third floor and there was nothing blocking our view. I would like to shoot more one day though. It was amazing to see, that's for sure.

How exactly do you photograph lightning? You must be pretty quick or have a really nice camera...

LOL...Neither....it was a real pain in the "ut-uhm" to try and shoot it with my digital camera at the time. So I changed over to short video and then took screen caps from that. It did take a little time to pause at the right moment to catch the shot.

Now my fiance's new camera that she got for graduation takes action shots. So if there was another night like that night, I would be able to do it. That night was rare from what I have seen here before because it was just none stop thunder and lightening, so it made it hard to not catch one. It honestly sounded like the bombings in Iraq during Shock and Awe.
