Do you think the Bush administration has gone to these lengths because they're bored and need something to play with in the final days in office?

You can bet your boots it's been decided and no matter which "party" takes office next year, this will be followed through with and drivers licenses and passports will probably lead the way by as early as December 2009 I've seen mentioned. Sometime in the not too distant future after that, "for your convenience" and to assist in the ongoing "war of terror" you will have a chip implanted in a body part not of your choosing lol

You can smirk all you like about my saying it's already mandatory, but like they say, "he who laughs last laughs last" lol

Actually it's far being a laughing matter because the pure technical innovation aspect of this will lead to it's implementation in many other countries. Sweden already has a pilot "passport project" underway and others are sure to follow. You guys really aught to get to know something about the Council on Foreign Relations and the role it plays in running your country and many others.

@knightstrike. Try figuring in RFID biometrics.

I was wondering how this was Bush's fault. <Sarcasm> I guess since he invented the RFID tag and single handedly required everyone in the civilized world to use identification with RFID tags even overpowering the European Union and the Queen of England herself.<Sarcasm>

Another good tech topic ruined by political discussion...

ok Grav!ty, I did a little research to get a quick grasp of RFID biometrics that you suggested and to me it just appears as an additional layer of security. The biometric part is the security requiring a fingerprint or other bio identifier and the rfid chip only allows info to be read if that check passes, whether this happens indipendently or in tandem of each other doesn't make any difference. The article you provided with the legal mumbo jumbo doesn't have any stipulations regarding rfid chips being implanted, only the biometrics are stated which would mean a fingerprint or retinal scan. I have no problem scanning my finger but I would totally object to an internal implant.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this as I didn't spend more than 5 minutes googling this.

Hey, everyone is free to keep their blinkers on and their eyes wide shut. Oh yeah, it's a great "tech topic" involving tinfoil hats in the opening sentence lol
