Hello everyone,

I'm going to be moving back to Denver, CO soon and I'd like your input on something. I had Comcast back before we left as my ISP, and I was fairly satisfied with their internet service. Always delivered the speed they advertised, good pings. etc.

However, there was always one big problem with it. Their upload speed. The speed offered was 6mbit download / 384 kbit upload (750kB / 48kB). After having Verizon FiOS for a short time here in Texas, having a 5mbit upload, you could probably see how I cringe at the upload Comcast offers. I was wondering if you all knew of any other ISPs that offer high uploads (approaching a meg). Also, a few questions:

- DSL sometimes offers higher uploads. Is DSL really that bad? Should I avoid it at all costs and get Cable?
- I heard comcast raised their upload speeds to 768kbit; but that they cap it back down to 384k if you upload steady for a couple minutes. Is this true?
- If you suggest an ISP, do you know how their how their size / reliability stands?
- Is Fiber internet available anywhere in CO?

- Thanks for your help. Please remember that like most families, we're not made of money. T1 for over $100 a month isn't really an option sad

it really depends on the area your in i guess.. i would say stick with DSL/Fibre as that is what i have used, cable has always been slow for my area. I do hear of people saying its faster for them and where they live... however Fibre will always be faster then copper lines.

as for if fibre is available.... check Fiber Experts they say Nowhere in CO has FiOS, as for fiber not so sure.

from my readings there is only Comcast and Quest internet providers. with your own modem its said you can get 14-1Mb/s connection.

Speed / fastest to slowest
Fiber
Cable (depends on how many are on your node, could be slower than DSL)
DSL

Dependability / good to worse
Fiber
Cable
DSL

Get fiber if you can. I have 6meg down & 512 upload and so far have no issues. I hated my DSL, high speed over a copper wire.......Think about it. At least cable has been more dependable for me in the past. Now my fiber so far (knock on wood) has not been down yet.

You can upload at a near constant 100KBps on Comcast. They haven't throttled me yet. What I'm dreading is their 250GB limit that they imposed as I'm pretty sure that I come close to it on a monthly basis, but FiOS is being installed here, so I don't care to much. You could also check out DSL Reports as they tend to have fairly reliable information for ISPs as far as quality and speeds offered within certain areas/regions.

Thanks for the info. @NT50: I thought that cable was probably a better choice.

The people at DSLReports.com inform me that the main performance tier on comcast is 6/1 now, so that should work (You have 100kbps upload? If Comcast is 6/1 now for the main tier you should be getting more like 128).

And yes, I'm dreading the 250GB limit as well -- I'm in Texas right now and have the FiOS 20/5 plan, and let me tell you I have enjoyed it. I'm making a point of downloading (or uploading) and very large files before I leave, ie I'm archiving some websites in my favorites, and also archiving some entire SVN repositories of some mods for a game I play. I did some quick calculations and found that you can download at full 6mbit speed for 92.5 hours before you hit the 250GB limit. I'm sure my internet usage now could come pretty close to that. I just dowloaded about 3.7GB in the past hour archiving an SVN, so you can imagine that cap isn't all to hard to hit. Yet it's funny, "effects only top 0.1% of customiers". Yeah, sure.

Now that I think about it... the person that told me 6/1 is now the main tier for Comcast lives in a different area... maybe they haven't upgraded all the 6/768k tiers to that yet? I thought their speed changes were national? I guess I'll have to call them and see.

It's too bad FiOS is not available in CO, and from the sounds of it Verizon doesn't plan to go there anytime soon... so that means Cable (their sub-par upload speeds, and blurry TV included) will have a stranglehold on the market for the foreseeable future!

I get 100KBps, not kbps. That makes it approx. 768-850k. I have hit upload speeds of ~300K for short periods, but usually just a few seconds, then it just slowly goes down to ~100K

Errr, that's what I meant. I was just saying 1mbit upload would be about 128kBps... so you must have the 768k upload. I'm wondering the truth in weather comcast has upgraded all the main performance tiers to 1mbit upload or not.
