This is an old Dell that I got from where I used to work. I installed XP pro on it so the grand kids would have something to play on when they came over.
As it turned out our daughter needed a computer so I gave it to her, and now when you boot up you get this message.
Primary Hard disk drive 1 not found
Strike F1 to continue, F2 to go to setup
If you hit F1 it loads and goes into Windows just like it is suppose to. If you hit F2 it goes to the bios screen and the harddrive is there.
I have run chkdsk, defrag the harddrive etc, reset the ribbon cable, checked the bios to make sure it is set to auto.
Any ideas as to what may be going on?

The battery was my first thought, but it isn't loosing the time setting so I ruled that out originally, so you think it could be the battery. That would be simple enough to replace (-:

I had this issue every time I switched my hard drives around (or removed them) and forgot the change the jumpers. Specifically, if the jumper is set to "cable select" sometimes it does not "select" the drive correctly upon the initial boot.

This one only has one harddrive in it but the jumper for what ever reason was on cable select, and I didn't notice until now.

This one only has one harddrive in it but the jumper for what ever reason was on cable select, and I didn't notice until now. |
Try it with no jumpers or on master and see what you get.

the only way it will boot to XP is with it set to CS other than that it can't find the harddrive at all. Tomorrow I will move the cable to IDE 1 as for some reason it is connected to IDE 2 and the CD rom is connected to IDE 1, I will then make it the Master and reload XP and see what happens

check in the bios and see if it is looking for another HDD.
the first HDD is usually HDD0 and if it's looking for HDD1 it maybe looking for a Master drive on the second IDE Channel. maybe the HDD should be master (CS) at the end of the cable on IDE channel1 and the CD should be the master on Channel2

Yea disable any secondary HDDs in the BIOS. That may be all it is.

Well both _Taz_ and ar1stotle were right, the second harddrive setting was set to auto I overlooked that in the bios.
Kids either were messing around in the bios or they removed the other harddrive, which I am sure was in there when I gave it to them.
