Alright... I know that this is now officially the "Politics" area but I do need an opinion on something other than politics. I'm looking to use some of the Tango icons in a web project I'm working on but am unsure of the licensing on them.

The Icon set is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.5 Generic license which states that "if you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one."

Does this mean that my entire project would need to be licensed under that license (or a similar one) to be legit? Or does it mean that only the icons (if changed) would have to be licensed under the Creative Commons license?

I just want to make sure that by using the icons that I'm not agreeing to put my entire project under a Creative Commons license or any other license.

Thanks!

Will, it seems to me that as long as you don't change the icons, anyone is free to use them, with attribution as to the source, the same as one would need to acknowledge the author or source of any information or original thought you include in your project.

If you do change them (the icons), you need to make them available to others on the same license terms. That can be done with a statement to that effect, and specifically mentioning the icons.

Your project is an entirely different issue and subject to your/it's own copyright. I don't think you need to even specify your copyright to put it into effect, but it may be a good idea to do so anyway.

By the way this is the Politics - Polls - Life & Opinions forum and not only for politics smile

Ok, that is what I had thought as well but I had a nagging at that back of my mind and just wanted to check that others had interpreted it that way as well. Thank you for the help!
