I have been messing around with this Latitude D520 laptop for a few weeks now.
I bought a 120GB HD and installed Vista on it and then decide to put XP on the original 40GB harddrive that I still had. Without thinking I just installed it, without hitting F6 and installing the Raid driver which is normally needed when using a SAT-A drive and XP even though you aren't building a Raid array.

So why did it work, is there something I am missing here? What is different about the bios, or chipset driver for this laptop, or is it all laptops?

I can see that it would certainly be difficult at best to build a Raid array on a notebook, which without the second HD in the optical drive bay where would you connect it, can't be the USB, because MS doesn't support booting off of USB.

Do you use SAT-A or IDE harddrives when you install XP?

well i use sata, but usualy theres an option to set them to appear as ide or turn off the hdd controller, which generally by default means you can install xp without having to change any options in the bios.

Take in consideration that Dell might be using a Sata controller that the driver is old enough that it is already intergrated into XP

The Latitude D520 is a couple years old and I did use XP w/SP3 so it must have been in there
