Watch this space as the guide is update!

Today Windows Vista SP1 was released to the public.
I am starting this thread to give our members information & tips on installing SP1.

Things to know before you download Windows Vista SP1
Published: March 18, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows Vista SP1 is available in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. Other languages will be made available soon.
Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows Update to download and install Windows Vista SP1 on single PCs:

• The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x64 is 125 MB (compared to 745 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).

• Windows Update will recognize PCs with known problematic drivers and postpone downloading Windows Vista SP1 until the PC has updated drivers or other applicable updates. Using Windows Update will help ensure you have the most trouble-free update experience possible.

• Some Windows Vista users may encounter an issue with a small set of hardware devices that may not function properly after updating a Windows Vista PC to Windows Vista SP1. This is an issue with the way the device drivers were re-installed during the Windows Vista SP1 update process, not with the drivers themselves—these drivers worked on Windows Vista RTM and they work on Windows Vista SP1. This problem is typically corrected by simply uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. We are working with the manufacturers of these devices to get the known problematic drivers and their install programs updated, and also on other solutions we can use to ensure a smooth customer experience when updating to Windows Vista SP1 using Windows Update. For new PCs provisioned with Windows Vista SP1, this is not an issue.

If you choose to install Windows Vista SP1 via the standalone installer available on the Microsoft Download Center, Microsoft advises that you first visit Windows Update and install all optional drivers. Read Knowledge Base Articles 948187 and 948343 for more information.

If you have a prior version of the Windows Vista SP1 beta installed, you must uninstall it prior to installing the final version. Use the Control Panel applet "Programs and Features" and select "View installed updates" from the top left of the task pane. Under Windows, look for "Service Pack for Windows (KB936330).

I have a query regarding the SP1 currently available and the device driver problem. What was mentioned is that if we install SP1 over a copy of already installed Vista the driver problems occur. What i would like to know is that if the SP1 is slipstreamed into an image of the original DVD and then that slipstreamed DVD is used to install windows do we still have the issue with the drivers ? Also in future posts if you could provide a step by step guide to integrate the SP1 into the OS DVD i would be very grateful.
Thanks & Regards,
Rishi.

The drivers issue occurs when you have certain not-100%-well-written drivers installed in your Vista RTM setup, and then upgrading that setup to SP1 --- if the rare problem occurs, probably the best response would be to clean install Vista (either RTM then upgrade, or install the SP1 slipstreamed version directly).

I do not know if upgrading using the official Vista SP1 slipstreamed media can provoke the issue, but I would assume that it does, given that it's technically a bug from some laxity in the drivers model in RTM rather than a bug in the SP1 as is too often stated.

I'll repeat for emphasis : This is NOT a bug in the Vista SP1, it is a bug in the Vista RTM, whereby certain drivers not fully compatible with WDM could be written for and installed in Vista.

Finally, the slipstreaming components are broken in Vista RTM, and the Service Pack cannot therefore be slipstreamed into the RTM sad It has been confirmed though that the SP2 will be slipstreamable into a Vista SP1 disc.

A method to integrate SP1 into the RTM setup media does exist, but it is a very imperfect method ; and for upgrading purposes, a Vista RTM DVD with SP1 integrated would provide practically the same result as just installing the RTM, then using the upgrade package.*

I would strongly recommend keping your eyes peeled and perhaps borrowing a friend or neighbour's official Vista SP1 installation media...

Thanks for your response. As i have already posted in the thread for Vista Slipstreaming - i would like to re-mention that i have given up the idea of slipstreaming the OEM DVD that i received from DELL. i have infact updated the Sigmatel driver from the DELL website and then installed the standalone SP1 update which ran very smooth and extremely fast. So now i have Vista SP1 thumbsup . Having to install vista and then install SP1 (which takes 1 hr as per internet resources) was my main concern why i wanted to slipstream the media. But now that i have checked the installation times i am very happy and would prefer just installing the SP1 separately on a clean install of Vista - if required. A tip for anyone using the old Sigmatel drivers - please check with the drivers available from DELL website for XPS 13xx or 15xx notebooks - they are the updated ones and once they are installed there are no issues whatsoever during and after install. Also doing an MSCONFIG to disable all NON-Microsoft services and startup items really helps during the install by freeing resources and avoiding any possible incompatibilities.

Folks, before you install Vista SP1 or if you're having issues getting it installed, check out this KB 948343 article at MS to see if any of the conditions apply to you, or whether you have any of the hardware referred to installed.

I tried installing SP1 on a system I just built and it keeps failing, I am getting an internal error; 0X80070002.

I ran the command "sfc /scannow" and it said it wasn't able to fix all or something like that is there anything else to try prior to blasting everything and starting over??????

Try using Windows Update and if that doesn't work for some reason, I think find an ISO of Vista with SP1 intergrated.

Not sure if MS has made them publicly available but they are at MSDN and TechNet and possibly elsewhere on the torrents. I'd be careful of the torrents though as one never really knows what's been slipped in.

I tried installing this one from Technet;
Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 Checked/Debug Build (x64) - DVD (English)en_windows_vista_ultimate_with_service_pack_1_checked_build_x64_dvd_71940.iso but it didn't intall right.

Should I have used this one instead; Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (x64) - DVD (English)en_windows_vista_with_service_pack_1_x64_dvd_x14-29595.iso and does it have Ultimate included as it doesn't say it?
