Hey everyone,

I've gone a staggering 2 years without buying a new computer (trust me, thats a record for myself). I've got a few problems with my Lenovo/IBM laptop and am looking to buy a new laptop in June.

Ever since the ability to run PC on a Mac has came out, I've really started to consider trying a Mac again. I had an old iMac which I bought in 2003 and it was pretty buggy to be honest. I've seen the new MacBook Pros and they are one of the best looking laptops I've ever seen.

Supposedly in June the major update to the MacBook Pro is coming out, so I might pick up a Apple Developer student membership, get the big discount and buy a new MacBook Pro then.

I'm hoping to here some of your experiences with the new Mac's, tell me you love it, or even tell me to run while I can, I'd like your thoughts.

I love my Dell XPS m1710 :D Had it for 2 years and IT still runs fast as ever.

Thats a powerful laptop Size, weight and battery life is one more consideration of mine. I'm a student and need to bring this to class so a 17-inch laptop would be too much for me to handle.

Just personally, for running Windows I might just about consider a Mac desktop, and install a Windows keyboard and mouse -- but it's hard to replace the keyboard on a laptop

IF you do buy a Mac, you will probably find out that once you start using the Mac OS then you will probably not ever dual boot it to Windows. I took Windows off my MacBook due to the fact the Mac OS did everything I needed it to do.

If you buy the MacPRO you will run into issue of it running warmer than the MacBook. I am not sure about the newer ones now buy I bought the first MacBook and my best friend has the first MacBook PRO. His runs 10 times hotter than mine, it is faster but my battery last a lot longer too.

Look at it this way, if you get a Mac you can close the lid and leave class, open the lid later and the computer will work, close the lid and it will hybernate again, open it and it will work........ and so on and so on....... Let see a Windows notebook run for 2 months without a restart and that is everyday use also.

I personally won't get a Mac laptop until they start supporting 7200rpm drives in all of their models (or flash becomes big and cheap). I also don't like all the marketing hype of Apple and the stupid Mac fans that feel Steve Jobs is god of the tech world. It also bothers me that Apple squashs almost all bad PR about security and also problems with their products, and there are a lot more than most people realize. In terms of reliability, HP and Lenovo are probably the best two PC brands. Acer had a few good models as well. And I've also heard of people having issues at times running Windows on their Macs via bootcamp, though that could have been fixed. You'll also run into the issue of right clicking if you go someplace without a mouse and have Windows install. Also, Macs aren't easy to fix if you have a hardware problem, so if, say, your keyboard died or hard drive, it would be at least a day after the hardware came in to fix it. And the keyboard and hard drive problem is much worse than it was before Apple started shipping more units. There is also the heat issue, which I don't really get why Mac laptops run so hot when PC laptops don't, but it can't be good for components.

Agreed. In all honesty, you should get a PC laptop and completely avoid an Apple laptop. You wouldn't believe how many problems and shortcomings there are in Apple's stuff. Not to mention that the Price vs. Performance/Functionality of Mac hardware goes to sub-zero on the scale. Why spend $3000 on a Macbook air that doesn't do anything except look cool, when you can get a PC laptop for the price that does almost everything, and screams in terms of performance?

Also, Jeff, it seems you've been pulled into Steve Jobs' Reality Distortion Field™. windows can easily run longer than that. While Windows 95 or 98 couldn't even dream of running for a day, I've seen XP and Vista run for much longer than what you said. Just use google if you don't believe me.

I've run my Vista desktop system longer without restarting that I have my PowerMac G4 since Apple became more popular and had to release monthly updates, always requiring a restart every month. Now if you want uptime, go to FreeBSD where you never have to restart unless you recompile the kernel or apply system updates (note: system, not software) which you don't really have to do. I had my server running for 8 months straight and the only reason it got turned off in that time was because the power went out at school. If you want real stability and system uptime, you can't beat a system where you compile everything for that computer.

My sister bought a mac book 2 years ago and she loves it though the D-Link wireless router I have in my home absolutely despises it.
You won't find any un-biased opinions on Mac vs. PC. Ever. I think Macs are okay. I was actually going to get an iMac but I really don't want to learn a new interface and from what I've used at my school it seems a bit limited but I'm sure if I spent a good two weeks I could get comfortable with it.
My best opinion would be to get a friend who has a MacBook or a Mac computer and just ask to use it for a couple of hours and see if you like it or not. I think its one of those things where you should really find out more for yourself than asking people, because all you will get is two camps flinging mud at each other.
