Hey fast reply.

I found a freeware app called nLite and I guess it does a ISO boot disc!
http://www.nliteos.com/

I dnloaded about 585 MBs of Drivers form http://komku.blogspot.com/2008/01/windows-xp-and-aspire-4720-travelmate.html

Took about 6 hours at b wifi speed, as the acer driver backup only wanted to be for mista vista and not for AP

I guess if the 'dual' boot goes foul, I just pop in the Vista restore disks and do the install in that????

Oh well, soon I'll head down into the deep end of the gene pool and Vista boot as soon as I get this nLite ware figured out, anywhy!

I guess I'll go and see about kubuntu as there were some cmd line typing for Ubuntu at the beginning of the install to set that up and that was over my head!

Thanks very much!

Opps,

Forgot to ask important questions,

1. When I do a ISO image or a boot disc, the drivers, like SATA, Intel (R), and the CD/DVD have to be already UNziped to get them loaded from the boot disc?????

2. How do make sure that the auto updates are for sure turned OFF, as in vista, billy had them turn themselves back on at shut down, during the "Windows is saving setting," (did that three times, that I know of!)
IS there a registry tweek to permanently turn off billy form scanning "MY" system to SEE what is on it so he can auto update it, without my OK?

I like to pick out my own up-DATES! I don't really care to have someone do the "picking" for me!

That may not be an allowable question for this thread, but billies scanning bothers me, more than most can fathom!

Thanks for this forum and all that you all do to help others!

Howdy,

Well I did the thing all the way to the unallocated space (21.01GB) and I still have a D: drive that is the second partition that came with the Acer in a dual core! It shows that C: drive has been shrunk, but the 21.01GB is in its own partition and not extended in the D: drive where I need it to be?

I wanted to use the D: drive for the XP install but I wanted to use the unallocated space (21.01GB extra) to add to the D: drive!

SO the problem is that I only have 21 GB partition and I need that amount given to the D: drive to have a total of 85GB for the XP install!

Well Vista didn't like the changes, and locked up and when I got it running again I had a shrunk down C: (to 47GB) but I couldn't get the unallocated space into D: drive even with

CMD prompt
DISKPART> select volume 1

Volume 1 is the selected volume
DISKPART> extend size=20205
I get
This argument specified for the command are not valid, for more info. . . . type Help Extend

So I type Help Extend and get . . .
This argument specified for the command are not valid, for more info. . . . type Help Extend

But that doesn't work either????

SO now what do I type behind . . . what is the Disc number that does not show up in the
Volume 1 is the selected volume
DISKPART>extend size=<MB> Disk=???????

Thanks for any help!

Just for clarity, are you installing Ubuntu 7.1? It has a simple walk-through for install through the GUI. Also, Infrarecorder is one of the best burners I've ever used for Windows. Plus, it's free. Also, as long as Ubuntu is installed first, the GRUB bootloader should always popup at boot. And a single partition to start with will help you out a lot (ie, partition at fresh OS install.)

If you already have XP and Vista installed with a working Vista boot menu, you should have no problems getting a GRUB based linux distribution like Ubuntu installed. During the installation process, Ubuntu will create a GRUB menu item for Vista which will take you to the usual Vista boot menu (which includes "earlier versions of Windows).

WOW that was fast as chat!

Sorry for not being more clear!

I only have Vista on C; nothing else!

I don't know if XP will go to D:

And I haven't got the Freeprie disc in the mail yet, but it is supposed to have a lot of apps already plugged in, as I don't really know how to add to Linux as If you can see in the above post I'm not to good with cmd prompt stuff!

Thanks

It's best to first get XP installed. There's a guide to doing that in this forum or the Vista Boot Problems forum, and once you've got them both booting properly, to install linux.

Not sure if Freeprie uses GRUB but I guess you've done your homework on that. Installation of Ubuntu 7.10 or later doesn't need any command prompt work, but I have found that it's best to install it to it's own hard drive as the selection of partitions from the user interface is a bit limited during setup, but the selection of a hard drive is clear.

easy guide right here....

partition your hard drive the way that you see fit... your Main OS should have the larger amount of space.

1: Install Windows XP
2: Install Vista
3: install *nix

why this order¿

XP is a Legacy OS, so its boot loader will be last, Vista is the newer of the OS's so it comes next as it takes over the XP Boot loader. Linux/Unix is last because it uses a different style boot loader that can read the Vista and XP loaders while XP and Vista cannot read Linux boot loader.

if you sit with the default install of Ubuntu it should install and configure grub by default, and your other OS's should be registered in the new boot loader.

If you decide to install over XP or Vista, then you have to repair the Linux boot loader with a repair floppy or your Ubuntu install will NOT load, and instead it will default to the Last OS installed loader. IE if you have Linux Vista and Xp installed, then you reinstall XP, you will no longer see the Vista or Linux boot options and only XP will boot. this is actually useful for a "Hidden" install where you would use a floppy disk or third part Boot loader to start your other OS's.( third part meaning not windows or *nix loader, such as grub or lilo ).

I usually install my OS's ( normally like a 8-10 operating systems ) then install all required drivers and software with a reboot after each driver for stability.

Now even tho I only need tri boot I can't even imagine more than ONE OS on my POJ, but 3 boggles my non tech mind, you know what the mention of 10 did a tilt!

I don't know if I have all the drivers for XPP on my Acer as they aren't being free as billy scared them or something/ Heard their knees knocking together on the phone call?

I'm going to try to keep Vista on, boot XPP to D' and if I dont have all the drivers I'll still have Vista to restore the boot to!

Than If XPP has all the drivers maybe go with a clean install XPP Vista ugh for warrantee and than Linux / Ubuntu or whatever!

You all have been more than helpful!

I hope billy sends you all some of his extra amerios as I am looking for my alien over ran job now, and that is why I haven't jumped in and did the installs!

Hope to have good news!

Soon, I hope!
