Okay here goes our youngest came home and told dad there was a 160 Gigabyte Ipod, Dad said no way they do not make a memory that big or they would not be still making HD's......... Well Dad was wrong there is a 160 GB Ipod, so how come you can only get a 16GB solid state drive from Crucial

I'm looking at my next build this year, and can see know reason for a HD if you can get 160 GB solid state drive.....mmmm maybe I will have to buy two Ipod's and wire them in?????????

Anybody have an answer????

the drives in the 30G 80G and 160G IPods are 1.8 inch hard drives. i have removed the drive from my 30GB and replaced it with a 120GB drive.

Yea. It's not RAM, flash memory, or a solid state drive. It's a normal hard drive... just in a compact form. That's why they're still susceptible to physical failure They've got spinning platters and an arm just like a HDD in your computer.

Check this out BC. There's also hybrid drives out there but I wouldn't touch them as they have minimal speed gain. For the price, they're not worth it unless one 'needs' such a drive.

IIRC the first large solid state drives will only come out towards the end of this year, or possibly early 2009 --- but the next round of drives will be even faster than the current ones

Thanks Gang, seeing as HD's where only meant to be a short term fix when they original came out( life span was only 1,000 hrs then), it's amazing that ten years later they still seem to be our only large storage option now. Like I original said Crucial as of now only offers the 16GB solid state drive, and Samsung is offering a 32GB unit http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/03/21/samsung_unveils_ssd/

Unfortunately we need a unit of at least 100GB in order to switch????

Anyone hear of someone else offering something close to this range in the future????

Newegg has been selling a 128GB SSD for at least the past month.
