The last movie I saw Daniel Day-Lewis in is "Gangs of New York", a Martin Scorcese film in which he played the role of gang leader of 'The Natives'. A great bloody action movie, with graphics in keeping with Scorcese's signature.

Looks like he's kinda been type-cast in this new role as Daniel Plainview, "a petroleum speculator played by a monstrous and shattering Daniel Day-Lewis."

Opens January 2

Here's a good review from The New York Times:

An American Primitive, Forged in a Crucible of Blood and Oil

It's very possible that this film could win the Oscar for Best Picture of 2007. At worst, it is the #1 or #2 best reviewed and most awarded film of the year already.

The best-known website in the world which tracks movie reviews is Rotten Tomatoes. They tabulate reviews from major media outlets. Right now the film has a rating of 90%, 54 good reviews to 6 bad. Its "Cream of the Crop" rating, which narrows them down to the largest and most influential outlets (New York Times, Variety, etc.), is at 93%. This makes it one of the best reviewed movies of 2007.

There is a site called Movie City News. They have a massive compilation of critics and reviewers' year end Top Ten lists. Right now they are including lists from 134 critics. There Will Be Blood is #2.

It opened in 2 theaters on December 21 since it needs to play a week in the US before December 31 at midnight to qualify for the Oscars.

It has already been nominated for Best Picture for the GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS, which are often considered a reliable indicator for the Oscars.

It has also been nominated for Best Picture for the CRITICS CHOICE AWARDS.

Many critics organizations have already handed out their 2007 awards, and a pattern is emerging among the leading contenders. Several films are appearing again and again on critics awards lists. The two films which are consistently leading the pack are No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood.

Here are a few of the awards which have been handed out so far. There Will Be Blood has won Best Picture, Actor, and/or other major awards by all these organizations.

NY FILM CRITICS CIRCLE AWARDS

NY FILM CRITICS ONLINE AWARDS

DC FILM CRITICS AWARDS

BOSTON FILM CRITICS AWARDS

LA FILM CRITICS AWARDS

AUSTIN FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION AWARDS

PHOENIX FILM CRITICS SOCIETY AWARDS

TORONTO FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION AWARDS

AFRICAN-AMERICAN FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION AWARDS

SAN DIEGO FILM CRITICS SOCIETY AWARDS

And the Broadcast Film Critics Assn., Gotham Awards, and San Francisco Film Critics' Circle are here.

I know this is stupid but he looks like Tom Selleck in that shot. Sounds like a good premise from what I've read so far. I hope it comes up here soon.
