Barry Bonds is due in a San Francisco federal court at noon today. But he may still be looking for a good, modestly priced lawyer, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The Journal says Bonds approached a high-priced lawyer last week but asked for a discount and a few other conditions. No deal.

Sports Law Blog sums up the rest of the story: Bonds "made due previously with a high-school friend/private investigator, a lawyer with a history defending police in state court, and a plaintiffs' lawyer, and the latter two do not like one another."

Meanwhile, at ESPN, new hire Mark Fainaru-Wada (co-author of Game of Shadows) joins T.J. Quinn to answer a few questions about the case and refute a few myths: The ESPNers' most pointed comment: Bonds is not the only target of the federal case. In fact, he initially wasn't a target at all.

USA TODAY's Jorge Ortiz spoke with legal experts on the case, one of whom offers this gloomy outlook for Bonds: "If a prosecutor doesn't win a perjury case, something's wrong, because they have the evidence before them before they make the charges. Every perjury case should be won, and the vast majority of perjury cases are won."

This really doesn't look good for him, it's too bad it had to come to this and after he's convicted I wonder how his HR record will be shown.
