I was just curious to see what the difference a external flash, such as a Nikon speed flash would make on a Nikon D80 when taking shots that require a flash.

Thanks

I have found that using an external flash on a 35mm (I have not experimented with digital cams yet) is definately worth it, especially if you can get one that "adjusts" the angle and such....... I still have a Pentax 35mm with an attached flash module that totally destroys the built in flash capabilities of the camera

Yeah, i do take some pictures that aren't in the most ideal lighting conditions. The problem is the extra size and weight to them...

While I try not to use a flash when it is necessary the external is definitely the way to go. You get what you pay for in this arena. Variable diffusion and angled bounce is a must. The cameras flash is always straight a your subject and you end up with serious white wash. with a bounce and diffusion you get more natural results even when using as a fill flash.

I got roped into doing portaits or a Girl Scout Father Daughter Dance and got great results. The equipment used was a Cannon Xti with a Cannon EF16-35L USM Lens and a Cannon speedlite 580EX on a tripod from about 6 ft away. The flash was angled up to bounce off of the whie ceiling.

Not sure about Nikon I use a Olympus 510 for fire investigation. With the internal flash it takes to long to charge and really doesn't offer enough seperation from lense. I get better lightingwith external flash. It also helps to eliminate red eye when taking pictures of people

I am to purchase an external flash for my Christmas present this year. I found myself using my Canon XTi more than I thought I would. So far I ahve taken about 3000 pictures this year.
