Ubuntu Developer Summit: Day 1 DiscussionsNotable Discussions from the Ubuntu Developer Summit: Day 1
By Tyler Richmond
Oct. 31, 2007

The Ubuntu Developer Summit is being held every day this week in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The topic of this gathering is Ubuntu's next release: 8.04 (Hardy Heron). The summit is open to the public and allows developers to work together in person and decide on common goals. Yesterday, there were several significant discussions worth noting.

Hardy Heron will likely have an altered theme. Since Warty Warthog's release in 2004, the Ubuntu theme has remained relatively unchanged. With new effects offered by third party software like Compiz, the developers are considering updating the theme. The Network Manager is also going to be revamped with the release of 8.04.

PPP support will be included for use with ADSL modems and other cel-based modems. However, while PPP support will be available, device compatibility is an entirely different animal. It is also likely that the new network manager will support dialup connections natively. Probably the most relevant discussion was that of the LoCo teams.

Ubuntu's LoCo teams are Local Community groups designed to help users collaborate and learn, and it's also a great way to spread the word about Ubuntu. However, many Ubuntu users do not know about the LoCo groups, so several ideas have been proposed such as letting the user know about them immediately after installation.

This directly relates to what we're trying to do here at Pro: bring a community together. The conference is well underway. By Friday, Hardy Heron's development goals should be much more firmly established.
