For both 64-bit Windows XP and Windows Vista I don't have a firewall other than the Windows one. I'm just wondering how essential it is to have one?

I've tried most that are available and even purchased Agnitum Outpost Firewall which "works" on 64-Bit Windows XP. I've uninstalled it because there have been occasions when it's been impossible to configure it to allow internet access after it's totally blocked all access including browsing. Even accepting all the defaults hasn't got around that. Quite strange really because it seems to work good for a while (few days to a few weeks) and then seems to go haywire

Sooo, my alternatives are to either ditch 64-Bit Windows completely or just go for it..."unprotected" saywhat
