Take a look for yourself at Photomatix, either the plug in or the stand alone application.

I had never heard of HDR (High Dynamic Range) images, and I'm still playing with the idea. But Tone Mapping is what I've really come to love in the last day or so. Check out the difference; granted I'm still getting the hang of tweaking my images (and I'm color blind, so that doesn't help).

Next is HDR. This takes a min (usually) of 3 images. One on auto, one overexposed, and one underexposed. The three are overlapped to create a 32-bit HDR image. Then you can tonemap (like above) and create some absolutely amazing effects. This is not the most interesting photo... just snapped something in the neighborhood, but still pretty cool how different these are. The fixed image almost looks like a painting, really incredible how clear all parts of the image are, versus being washed out or over/under exposed in the original image.

Yeah the most incredible thing about the HDR stuff is how what's completely in the shadows in the top photo is clear as a bell in the second. And the same for super washed out overexposed areas. It's really incredible.

Take a look at these:

It's insane... just incredible that these are REAL photos. No major tricks involved.

I finally got to put Tone Mapping and HDR to the real test - out in a real landscape.

Check this out... more later when I have more time and it's not so late.

Awesome pictures John. Does your camera do that or you have to do it by hand ?

The later part I have to do by hand in a program. But the camera does most of the work just by capturing the three images. In other words, I don't have to "tweak" it much in photoshop like I would a normal photo.
