Or you could try to use the startup recovery option when booting from the Vista DVD to see if it can possibly repair the Vista bootloader. I've heard of some success stories, others where it failed, but it would be quicker than a full reinstall if it works.

Hello,

i found a solution ... It's much easier...

On the original Microsoft DVD in the "boot" folder there is a program called "bootsect.exe".

run
bootsect.exe /nt60 c:
to restore the Vista bootloader.

run
bootsect.exe /nt52 c:
to restore the XP bootloader.

bootsect.exe /help shows all options .....

LOL I was just about to post exactly the same thing, that I found over at the AeroXP website, posted on May 5th over there lol tongue

Apparently a good trick is to copy the bootsect.exe into C: so that you can just run it from anywhere wink

Yes, the bootsect.exe command actually helped save my Vista bootloader/manager menu; Although WinRE (Booting from DVD) saved my 5381 installation, it also wiped out all of the \Boot directories and the Vista Bootloader, so I just ran bootsect.exe to recover from that

Thanks to all who replied to the thread. I ran bootsect off C: and that restored my Vista bootloader. I hope to visit this forum regularly from now on. Hopefully I can help as well as learn.

I have a 100GB drive on a laptop with a 50/50 split so I used Vista to partition off 12GB for Win XP and put the OS on there. The first thing I noticed how oddly XP behaved, the screen jerked, image looked awful. I suppose I expected things to proceed smoothly. I'm glad I recevered Vista. I'll wait for tomorrow to put XP in the loader.
