Ok, now that taxes are over for me I can divert my overtime pay to building a new computer. This has been long awaited as my current one is a dinosaur (2 1/2 years old).

This is all in the planning stages and this is what I have spec'd so far.

Memory - PC2700 DDR 512mb
Processor - Athlon XP 2400+ Socket-A
Fan - Quiet Maxx 5100 Socket A/423
Motherboard - Soyo Dragon KT400 Platinum (built in sound)

questions -

1. What is the actual processor speed of the XP 2400+?

2. Any recommendations for a video adapter? I have always used nVidia based cards but thought about doing something different. Are people with ATI Radeon cards happy?

That's all for now,

Mike, you wondering about the bus speed? It probably runs a 266FSB. Like you I've usually stuck with the Nvidia cards, but went out a month ago and got an ATI 9000 Pro. I immediately starting getting lockups with a couple of programs, especially the latest Links golf. I finally took it back and got a Geforce TI4200. I've been happy with it so far.

I just asked my friend, he says it runs at 1.93 GHz before overclocking, lol!

Mike, Stay with Nvidia unless you are ready to spend some time tweaking and adjusting the ATI card to get it right. When they work they are awsome, but when they don't ... Well Bob already told ya.... blink !

I like your choice on the Mobo, that is in my next project as well. However I would like to point out that you can buy a good Mobo and P4 2.5 (533FSB) for right at the same price as you are going to pay for the AMD / Mobo., and not have all the fan noise trying to cool it, Just something to think about.

Keep us updated on your decision's and how things go.

Good Luck,
