i recently found that i had MYWay speedbar on my machine. my son and nephew use pc also. None of us downloaded the thing(so they say)
when i tried to "uninstall" it, norton caught a virus. an unrepairable, quaratined , virus. a back door virus.

what would not delete with the "uninstall" we tried to un install manually. didnt work. we still have 1 file remaining.

i believe this file, virus, is causing my machine to run amock.

i have web pages that will NOT close, i have to use the ctrl, alt. delete system to close them.
my address bar....seems to change where i go, it will sometimes change the address i type in and takes me elsewhere. not all the time. i have that set to "auto" the address i put in.
sometimes in both msn messenger and yahoo my list of friends --usually 1 or 2----will have the names doubled up.
:woot
my downloads are very slow and sometimes quit.(when youre getting updates for games it gets quite annoying)

i've had 2 people who know pc , builds and repairs, try to use "remote asst" to help and they have been unable to get rid of the MyWay speedbar 1 remaining file.

does anyone have any suggestions. i am not very pc smart. need walk thru asst., i dont want to redo the hard drive if i can help it.

i have windows xp, and a compazq presario model 5300

am slowly burning and ready to throw this thing away.

Hello irish_58103

Welcome to PROneT... smilenod

Do you remember what the name of the virus is that Norton caught...if so..did you go to their website for the removal directions...if not try this url.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html

MYWay speedbar sounds like one of those ap's that hijacks your browser and/or installs malware of some sort...I did a search on MYWay...the only thing I came up with was at Pest Patrol...don't know if this will apply...but have a look...see what you think...unfortunately the free vs. of Pest Patrol only detects the adware/pests but does not remove them...for that you would have to purchase their product...here's that url.

http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/db/m/myway.asp

Here are two more addy's you might want to take a look at...tons of information on software that hijacks and installs pests of many types...I realize you didn't mention that your homepage was hijacked...however there are many different types of problems covered on these sites.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/hijacked/

http://www.cexx.org/adware.htm

Good luck...hope you find this helpful...please post back and let us know what happens... smilenod

i decided to try and just "redo" my harddrive to factory spec using my restore disk that i got with the pc.

i got: contact your compaq dealer.
was unable to even restore my pc to the original state.

was told by the compaq help line it was a software/hardware conflict.

i did try and run the pest control i was given by my brother.
didnt get rid of the file.

I'd run Norton again and see what it catches. It really helps if you have the exact name.

Check out this Symantec page for the name of the virus. Or you can do a search for it at the top of the page if you don't see it. They give you very detailed information on removal and what the virus will do to your machine.

Let us know if you need more help.

Btw, if you click on the alphabetical "B" on that list there is no backdoor devil, but there is a backdoor delf.

You mentioned you were not able to do a restore with your disc...does it allow you to do a clean install if you can't get that file removed...Post back and let us know where you stand...give us as much info as you can...ask questions...what ever is necessary in order to allow us to help you... smile

I wouldn't touch Norton with a 10 foot pole, but doesn't it have a log or some type of history showing what it's found or repaired?
