Tiny Firewall 64

From TINY SOFTWARE

Home Page

In preparation for the installation, the Windows Firewall was disabled in Security Center so that any potential conflict could be avoided and installation commenced

Setup

The program installation was to C:\Program Files (x86)\Tiny Firewall Pro\
A complete installation was selected and installation was successful

Setup Complete

On reboot a window popped up giving one the option to continue with a 28-day trial or to register. This was followed by the Tiny Firewall Activity Monitor, which can be set not to appear at start up.

Registration

Activity Monitor

The internet was connected to without any intervention by Tiny Firewall but as soon as Internet Explorer was opened, a warning dialogue opened asking whether of not the application should be allowed. “Trust it” was selected so that IE would be allowed in future

Access Granted

Most major applications were immediately identified by Tiny Firewall as trusted applications. There is a comprehensive Adminstration Center in which one can set permissions and one can update known applications via the Check Sum Scanner

Update Known Applications

There was one persistent problem that arose and that was with Microsoft Outlook.
No matter what permissions were granted for it – and every attempt was made – Microsoft Outlook failed to open.

The only work around to this problem was to disable the Windows Security feature of Tiny Firewall – which is very similar to the protection provided by Win Patrol. This in itself is not a serious issue as the Firewall itself continues to operate fully. Hopefully though this issue will be addressed by Tiny Software

Shields Up by Gibson Research Corporation was selected to test the efficiency of the firewall

Conclusion

This is a comprehensive, effective and advanced Firewall and is the first Desktop Firewall available to be specifically run on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Tiny Software have filled an immediate gap in x64 Internet Security and deserve recognition for that, while the other producers of Desktop Firewalls catch up and realize that the need is real and one that must be satisfied.

Lastly - a thank you to our member, myth - who found and posted download details for this firewall
