64-Bit Microsoft Powertoys for Windows XP and Server 2003

This utility, although from Microsoft, does not seem to be available for download from Microsoft. The current version is a pre-release (Beta). One should not assume from the file name that this utility will only run on AMD systems - this evaluation was done by installing it on an Intel EM64T system.

The installation was very straightforward and a shortcut to the application was placed on the Start Menu. Unlike the old Tweak UI, there is no Control Panel icon.

Setup

One of the first things many Windows users do after installation of Windows XP is to remove the shortcut arrow from the desktop icons. Until this program was made available, the only way to do that in Windows x64 versions was with a registry edit – a fairly risky endeavor for those not familiar with the Windows registry. 64-Bit Microsoft PowerToys takes the risk out of that.

A great feature for advanced Windows users is the direct access to Group Policy Editor that this program provides. To illustrate just how powerful Group Policy Editor is, there is a screenshot below showing some of the many changes one can make to a basic service we are all familiar with – Windows Update. Who would have suspected that it could be configured to such an extent?

With filesharing networks in wide use, the Access Control feature is an excellent one. This screenshot illustrates some of the items that one can select to change or take control of.

A number of customizations and modifications can be made to Internet Explorer and some of its behavior changed.

Conclusion

This is a powerful program which allows one to make the user experience of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition much more friendly and personalized.

Yes! Works great thumbsup !

My x64 started displaying wrong icons, with TweakUI x64 I am now able to rebuild the icons. smilenod

Problem with Windows displaying wrong icons is; it gets worse over time. I had to re-install x64 in the past to fix it. eek

My fear that that will happen again is gone with TweakUI for x64. whistle

Microsoft if you read this, I liked all your Powertoys. I would be very happy to see them all for x64 on Microsoft.com We all would I guess.

Kindest regards,

Uncle X(NL)
