Adventure Games

The Entertainment Pack

Three of the greatest PC games ever made (and one other) finally get scrubbed up, polished and ready to play on Windows XP. Sam and Max, and Full Throttle, a pair of utterly classic point-and-click adventure games, has been thought lost to the age of DOS, as Windows XP has moved on so far technologically as to not support relics. However, these new editions play as beautifully as they ever did, with Sam and Max in particular being hilarious and memorable in its uniquely surreal way. 1998's 3D effort, Grim Fandango, remains just as essential, and as a swansong to its admittedly limited genre, is a fine farewell.

The Spielberg-approved The Dig is substantially less charming and engrossing, although it's still a fine effort with LucasArts ' typically high production values. Anyone who's never played one of these games might not grasp the appeal, but the burst of nostalgia for LucasArts veterans is a wonderful thing. And, in an age where most PC games seem to involve guns, it's good to know we were once able to do it non-violently.

Three Classic Games, ready to enjoy all over again.
