The hf_mig directories are part of the hotfix migration and
multibranch support system, so you might need them in the future. It is not desirable to delete $hf_mig$ directory.

On my computer I have 43 $anything$ folders containing 239.95 MB of materials. 96.5 mb is in the $hf_mig$ folder. It seems like a lot of hard drive space that I cannot use for other things. What are the $uninstall**$ folders for?

normally for uninstalling "hotfixes" or other parts of SP's.............. if you don't want to uninstall your hotfixes/security fixes, they can be deleted, although not recommended.......
