Hey people,

i downloaded Longhorn PDC 4051 and cant even put it on to CD, i got it as a .tar archive, extracted that then got loads of rar files that say " The utility rar is not in your PATH " then i changed the file i downloaded to a ISO by taking the .tar off the end of the file name but then if i try to burn it it just puts the ISO image on the disk, i am running LindowsOS 4.0, but my dad also done the same as me on his computer running XP Pro it burns but the disk has no data on it! i really want to run Longhorn as i used one of the first alpha versions and fell in love with this OS. PLEASE PLEASE can you help, if you want to email me my email addy is : Removed addy for your protection, augie
Many Many Thanks, Nick

When you're burning an iso, you need to load it in your burner software as an image file. I prefer Nero from ahead.de
If you just try to burn the iso straight to a disk, it will still be an iso on the CD.
Just to make sure that it's really an "iso" after you renamed it, go to www.winiso.com and download winiso. You'll have some limitations on what you can do with it, but at least you'll know if it's really an iso or a rar file. I'm also assuiming you're using a later version of Winrar to extract that "rar" file. Rar files compressed with newer versions of Winrar aren't always compatible with other extraction software.

Use winRAR to extract the .tar files. Once the initial .tar files is extracted you will end up with a bunch of .rar files. Extract the first one and it will build the ISO. Once you have the ISO it is possible to use Nero or another piece of burn software to burn to CD. But before you burn to CD you will need to do some mofications to the ISO. You will need to use a utility such as UltraISO or WinISO to replace two files in the ISO. The files pidgen.dll & setupp.ini need to be replaced and the CD needs to be made bootable.

An image file which is meant to be bootable is burned in the same way as you burn an ISO image file. Still, I believe you need to replace or add those 2 files ssmith mentioned, pidgen.dll & setupp.ini

If you are having trouble booting the CD you will need to use a boot image you can either grab one off the internet commonly boot.bin or you can make one yourself if you have a WindowsXP cd.

Once you get a bootable iso image, go to properties and choose Nero to open the iso. And the you just have to click burn, much easier than getting a boot.bin.

If the iso is not a bootable iso then it will need to be modified to include a boot image (boot.bin). a number of the longhorn iso images I found on the internet were not bootable. If your is then yeah all you need to do is use nero or another piece of burn software and put it on disk. If it's not then you will need to make it bootable to use it, unless of course you start the install from within another version of Windows (Not recomended).

Get a file that is definitly bootable, so you don't have to mess with anything.
