Hey, stars you locked the post
so i made a few one with some things that should help some people out
I just found this site, but have been playing with the alpha for a few months now
A few problems you wanna get rid of
Explorer Memory Leak
1.) kill the sidebar
a.) right click sidebar
b.) properties uncheck Enable Sidebar
2.) kill previews
a.) Right click Computer
b.) click properties,
c.) click advanced tab,
d.) click performance
e.) click settings
f.) uncheck "Show preview and filters in folder"
3.) kill unifolder browing
a.) Double left click Computer
b.) click tools
c.) click Folder Options
d.) click View Tab
e.) check "Launch folder windows in a seperate process"
4.) reboot, the comp should be much happier :D
-filters arent really used much, and neither is the sidebar so might as well save your self some headaches (they are broken in several places) and just turn them off.
Static IP IE "my net connection is slow/not working" fix
Okay this one took me a bit to fix. And wont fix all the networking issues with 4051 but its a good start. What happens is that if you are using a static IP the gateway router gets messed up. So, a quick hop into the shell can fix it....kindof.
1.) Get to the command shell
a.) click start
b.) click run
c.) type cmd
d.) hit enter
2.)change the route (gets a little complicatd hang in there)
a.) type "route print", hit enter
b.) write you metric in.....look below to find metric you should something like this
====================
Interfance list
X (write this first number down, this is your metric)
c.) type "route change 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 x.x.x.x metric 1", where X
x.x.x.x is the IP address of your gateway and X is the metric ID of your network card (again metric id is from above step).
Now, to make things even more fun :D This doent save after rebooting. So you need to make some sort of script, macro, or a bat file....I made a bat.
d.) create a bat with the above information
e.) save it to somewhere you remeber
f.) run gpedit.msc
g.) navigate to Computer Configuration
h.) then Windows Settings
i.) then Scripts
j.) double click startup
k.) Click add
l.) find the bat, hit okay
*whew, if you make it through that it
should work.
Fixing explorer lag when opening my computer
I've seen this on two installs I've had, kind of random....but one fix has been to disable scanner support, do this fix
ONLY if you dont need a scanner under longhorn.
1.) open services.msc
2.) disable "Windows Image Aquisition Service"
fixing Messenger Auto Sign-in
Another bug that only shows up now and then...atleast this is an easy fix :D
1.) open MSNMSGR.EXE
2.) click Select properties
3.) click Compatibility
4.) Select windows 2000
5.) Check Mark the Allow non-administrators to use
Use a different file system then WinFS
I know this is rather disappointing. WinFS is a shiny new toy to play with, but its not optimised, expect to see the next build have a more polished version of WinFS. In the interum, WinFS HOGS resources like mad, and you will see massive speed increases by switching to another file system. Atleast, I've noticed a big improvments....despite that, im still running WinFS on my current workstation, its got the emugh to handle the unpolished file system.
I hope the above helps a few people, if anything is confusing post and ill try and get back to you when i get time. I'm sure other users on this forum can help out as well. Also if you have further tips, or easier ways to fix the above (or others) please post and let us know!
