Warrior Kings Battles
Medieval sorcery abounds in this 3D strategy epic
Warrior Kings was one of last year's better strategy games, so it's good to see it return this year in its new
Battles guise: a standalone expansion that enables randomly-generated skirmish conflicts. The demo gives an exhaustive tutorial on playing the game, plus one skirmish match, in which you play against three opponents of varying difficulty in a forest landscape, in either traditional or flag-catching Valhalla mode.
If you've played many real-time strategy games before, such as
Age of Mythology, you'll get to grips with how to play very quickly. Basically, you need to create and balance an economy while using it to fund your war against an opponent. Peasants will farm, mine and trade to earn money and resources, which are spent on infantry, horseback-mounted soldiers and hard weaponry.
Constructing different buildings grants you access to new units and structures, but don't go on a spending frenzy straight away - concentrate on building up a large community of peasant workers to support your war first.
Destroying your enemy's villages will cripple their economy, but watch out for guards.
