PROnetworks released VistaBootPRO 2.0 Beta yesterday, and thanks to some great bug reporting by some of our members, we have released a refresh version of VistaBootPRO 2.0 Beta which addresses an issue with renaming entries.

As is the nature of Beta software, although much testing is done prior to a release, not all scenarios or configurations can be tested, and that is where the Beta Testers come in. With the help of the bug reports submitted by our members, the Betas team has come up with a fix for anyone who may have experienced these issues with the first build of VistaBootPRO 2.0. It is recommended that you follow the instructions below, unistall VistaBootPRO 2.0 Beta, and then redownload the refresh version which is available HERE


The fix for this requires two steps:

1. Recover your Windows Vista installation

Boot to your Windows Vista installation DVD and at the "Install now" setup screen select "System recovery options" at the bottom left of the screen.

Startup recovery should start running immediately but if not, select your Vista installation drive and click "Startup recovery". Restart your system when prompted and you will now be able to boot into Windows Vista.

2. Recover the ability to boot into your Windows XP installation

From within Windows Vista open the command prompt (DOS window found at Start>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt) and run the following commands:

CD\ and press Enter on the keyboard

bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=C: and press Enter on the Keyboard

(where C: is the drive on which you had Windows XP installed initially, before installing Windows Vista).

You will now be able to boot back into either Windows Vista or Windows XP.

wouldnt it make it less confussing to name it VistaBootPRO Beta 2.1,vs refresh.

Good point Mac25, however, it really is just a refresh which only addressed that one issue. We had already started devlopment on VistaBootPRO Beta 2.1 when that was released and it is currently undergoing final testing and should be released shortly with some streamlined features, and coding enhancements.

Actually that is a great question Mac, and yes you can backup to a floppy from the Backup/Restore option in the just released VistaBootPRO 2.1 Beta - just select your floppy drive as the location for the backup in the file dialog box. One thing we are working on for the next build has to with this, as when backing up to a slow floppy drive you may get an error about the Log file, however, if you press continue the backup should complete. As a matter of fact I just tried this out on Vista 5472 with VistaBootPRO 2.1 and the backup and restore worked fine.

now if for some reason the dual boot loader settings get corrupt can the backup be restored from the floppy and get the system back up.

Using the WinRE command prompt by booting the Vista DVD and going to recovery options, you can easily restore the saved bcd file from either a location on the hardrive, or even from a floppy by using the command: bcdedit /import "C:\VBPback.bcd"
(where C:\ is the location of the backup and VBPback.bcd is the name of the backup file - that is the default name of the file saved in VistaBootPRO 2.1)

Hi guys.

I really need your help.

i used the version 2.0, and renamed the entries, without knowing about the bug.

But anyway, i did it, and now i have a problem. I have uninstalled 2.0, installed 2.1, re-installed the boot loader, and startet the computer with the vista CD, and using the system recover tool.

Now i can boot into Vista, but not XP. When following the advice above, i open cmd with admin.

i get this error.
"C:\>bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=d:
An error occurred while attempting to reference the specified entry.
The system cannot find the file specified."

What am i doing wrong here, please help.

Welcome to PROnetworks trenskow!! Great to have you here, how about stopping by our Introduction Area so we can welcome you properly. Please be patient as our members stop in and check out your issue.
It may be possible that you will need to fix your XP first, then Vista. What I mean is boot your XP CD to the recovery console and use "fixboot", then verify when your finished that you can boot to XP, then Boot to the Vista DVD, using the Advanced startup repair (WinRE) which should pull back Vista AND XP, although you will probably want to rename the entries
