I am thinking of ditching my diaup for broadband, but I don't really know whats the best choice and is not that familiar with broadband. The two current ones that I know of are comcast and yahoo. I usually just browse the internet and do some occasinal downloads. So what broadband service do you guys think I can get. Thanks.

Since you're not going to be using your connection heavily, you may want to check into a DSL connection. Save a few bucks and have your phone available.

Not too much difference between cable and DSL. Upload/download speeds are pretty much the same. Cable is a shared service. That is, you "share" a connection with other subscribers in your vicinity. If many are on, speeds may drop. DSL is assigned to your phonenumber. The draw-back here is that you must be within a certain distance of a distribution point. I have had Earthlink as a DSL provider for several years. Not bad, but I'm thinking of switching to my phone service (SBC). Some friends of mine have Comcast and are happy with that service. Typically download speeds are anywhere from 384 KBPS to 1500 KBPS. Upload speeds are usually 128KBPS to 256KBPS. Remember that "download" means you receive data while"upload" means you send data.

Hope this helps...

Unless you are a business or need direct access, a static IP is unnecessary. As a matter of fact a static IP can be troublesome as it is easier for our "hacker" friends to find you. Most individuals get a dynamic IP which is the safest. Without getting too detailed, a static IP is like your house address. Once someone knows it, they know how to reach you. A dynamic IP is like if you lived in a motor home smile

With cable broadband you have a static I.P. However, as long as you have a good firewall there is no problem there. Also, with cable it does slow up a little between 7 and 9 PM on weekdays. But with DSL you have to be within a certain distance of a provider in order to get really good service. What it boils down to in my humble opinion is if you live in a large city with a lot of DSL providers then that is the way to go. If not then go cable and live happy ever after, but it is expensive compared to dial-up.

Cable is twice as fast and twice the price. I have had Comcast for 3 years now and what OLDNY said is true about between 7 and 9. But I do alot of downloading so that is the way for me. Plus I have 5 computers on a network.
