Beginning in 2003, new macs will ONLY be able to boot into OS X. They no longer will be able to boot a disk that has an OS 9 system folder. This could be for two reasons:
- To force more people to use OS X, as software developers have been complaining of the slow adoption rate - and threatening not to make software for it
- Apple is going make a major processor change - ie to an x86 based CPU, so PPC based OS 9 won't be able to boot
Either will be for the better.

| I want the Power Mac G4 at least 733 (which is like 1.5GHz on PC's) with Mac OS X Jaguar. If the price would come below $1000 I'd say heck yeah, but right now it's just way to expensive to even consider. That's where the PC world still wins. But I do want to try it... just not sure where I can go to even see it in action. Maybe at school, I'll try that first... |
Check out the eMac or iMac (the latter is cheaper) - they both have G4 processors. the iMac has either a 17" LCD or 15" LCD, and the eMac has a flat screen 17" CRT. Both are awsome computers, I have used both. To test out Jaguar, go to your local Apple reseller (MicroCenter is one, Apple has their own stores, etc). They almost always have test Macs for you to check out. btw, if you want screenies of OS 10.2 just ask, I use a dual processor (533MHz*2) G4 with 612 (i think) MB of ram at school. Great machine.

Send me some screen shots I'd love to see em. We could make em smaller and post them in here.
But I'll also look into those other models. I found a page that gives discounts for students also

My friend the manager of a Apple store said something about apple would lose market share if they ported it to PC. About the intel making chips for Apple, thats is strange not to make fun but picture it, an iMac on your desktop with a little sticker beside the apple saying intel inside.
Motorola is not producing chips fast enough and powerful enough for Apple. Mind you Mac processors run under RISC Processing not SISC which most PCs use for processing. Apple is considering using IBM as they're supplier from what I'v been reading at www.appleinsider.com

Intel and Apple could be a neat bunch though.
Immagine if intel called themselves the 'seed' of the Apple... Intel inside.
That'd be kind of cool.

Say you are a school - they give you a greater discount. I will take some today and mail em to you, John.

It looks like apple and ibm are teaming up to work on a new proc. Here is the article.
I'm lukewarm over the whole apple/intel thing. Although I would think the same architecture on all computers would be good, I don't like the direction that intel/M$ is going with this whole palladium/DRM thing. It's too scary.
