I just installed Longhorn 4051 on my PC as part of a dual-boot setup. When I went to install the Catalyst 3.9's for my Radeon 9500 Pro, it said it could not find a display adapter, and suggested switching to a VGA adapter. I tried switching to standard VGA, but I don't have that option in the driver list. I have tried booting LH in VGA mode, but I still received the same message. I also tried manually updating the built-in Radeon driver with the Catalyst 3.9's inf file, but upon rebooting, my monitor shuts off at the desktop. I suspect it has something to do with SMARTGART trying to test the display settings, like it does on first boot, but I don't know how to disable it. Anyways, has anyone here succesfully installed any of the Catalyst drivers on 4051?

Well, I finally managed to install the Catalyst's using the 3.7's and using Windows 2000 Compatibility mode on the Setup.exe. Both the Control Panel and the drivers work. My guess is that the VPU Recover feature introduced in 3.8 and 3.9 doesn't want to work in Longhorn yet. Also, Smartgart doesn't seem to work, though it's not a big deal as it doesn't adversely affect anything. To be sure, after installing the drivers I ran ATI's SmartGart uninstaller and rebooted.

Good luck thumbsup

i've been wondering. Is Microsoft now trying to tie almost every god-forsaken driver there is for its OS so it can be a true PnP OS?
Kinda silly if you ask me, I mean it detects and installs drivers for my ATI IGP 320M but ya know ATI's drivers are much better than what M$ can write.
Kinda sucks, well you're not the only one. GeForce FX users have been hit retty hard by LH.

I have 2 say that I didn't have the problem with my Radeon 9200. LH 4051 installed drivers without problem and it works fine.

Then again you have to ask yourself that their target is for users, not gaming users.
Radeon 9200 is on a light side. 9500 and above is considered a gaming card. FX 5600+ is considered a gaming card
