PDC Prep Tips

Although my Microsoft contract work has ended, (d*mn, I said too much! Just kidding...) I got a preview of the PDC information that awaits.

All the presentation slides have been made available internally, and are going through legal review now. Good stuff. The slides indicate there will be lots of demos. Hopefully, Microsoft will make these slides available to the public as they did with TechEd.

I read through a substantial PDC book that talks about Avalon, WinFS, MSBuild, and Indigo. If this book is handed out to each developer, read it, because it could make some sessions largely redundant and ease the decision-making process as to which session to attend. It will also be a good read about the philosophy and design goals of Longhorn, which I will get into more detail two weeks from now.

Longhorn is still in an early state, when you attend the PDC; so you may not get a chance to much of the Flash-like user interface. The PDC disk will contain Longhorn (build 4051), Whidbey (build 1.2.30703--should really be changed to build 2.0, because it's that big a release), Yukon, the Longhorn SDK, and samples. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft sends attendees a second set of disks several months from now when Longhorn is at a more finished state--as I get the feeling, there this PDC was timed long ago to coincide with a beta release of Longhorn, but I don't really know the truth.
