Larry, just out of interest, do you have any mapped network drives on your laptop? Only wondering because Windows always tries to enumerate the amount of space on all drives when the "save as" window opens.
If you've got mapped drives that XP can't access, it may be hanging whilst waiting for a response from the inaccessible drives. Try switching off the option "Automatically search for network folders and printers" option in the Folder Options dialogue box.

I did have that checked. I unchecked it and am duplicating the last sequence of steps that led to the lockup last night. So far it looks good...when I clicked to save a file and navigated to the folders which were locking me up. All was okay.
It never did this before. If that was the problem, why now?

Difficult to say, really, Larry. If you did have any shared network resources that are no longer available, that could cause the problem, as could changes in firewall configurations, slow response of one of the networked resources, even though it's still there, something that Windows placed in My Network Places that's not available anymore, it's pretty hard to tell.
I'm guessing, as you didn't come back and say that it happened again, that the issue's resolved now, though?

Everything's back to normal now, yes. I had no changes on my system at all before it started. I just hope it stays this way.
Thanks so much.
(Fingers crossed)
