hey guys, i have a retail copy of Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit and 64bit. I want to reformat my pc, but don't want to go through the headache of downloading and installing the SP1. Does anyone know any guides online on how to do the slipstream or a download link from Microsoft for Windows Vista Ultimate x64 with SP1 integrated?

There are several guides on the net so far. I am not sure if any of us have slipstream the full release yet.

I think MS only make the intergrated SP1 ISO available via TechNet and MSDN and it's probably best to get one put together by MS.

Probably the next best option is to use vLite although it comes with the same limitations as we came across with our method...that if you slipstream into say Home Premium, you end up with only Home Premium available on the DVD. Not a train smash in my opinion

I just checked and anyone can get the SP1 ISO. I think it's the right one, 1418.1 MB. Here's the link.

That is the standalone / network install SP1 for Vista. That is what you need to slipstream into Vista.

The ISO on technet is Vista with SP1 already slipstreamed into it.

What gets me is even with using the Technet Vista w/SP1 how many updates it still does after installation.

for technet i gotta be an msdn member right? i have seen the msdn vista with integrated sp1 in usnet groups. i just cant trust those. i don't know why. since its my os, i just don't feel comfortable using them bc I dont know if someone has modified it and injected some kind of worm/torjan into those.

You can also join Technet, which I think is a lot cheaper than MSDN

I'm pretty much a perfectionist myself, and am lucky enough to have a clean copy of the Vista +SP1 directly from MS --- but in fact the standalone Vista SP1 upgrade installation software is much much cleaner than in previous SPs for previous versions of Windows, and in any case will provide *exactly* the same results as the unsupported SP1 "integration" methods described in these web sources.

So unless you can find a good clean copy of the Vista SP1 integrated installation media, it's just easier and just as effective to use the Automatic Update version of this software.

Technical reasoning : Vista uses an image-based installation method, so that the complex and somewhat unstable search and destroy updating methods of previous Windows versions aren't there to cause any problems
