I want to upgraded to Vista. I got XP. I have a Q6600. 2GB of DDR2 533 ram. Really old hard drive. I want to get 4GB DDR2 800 ram. And a new 500GB hdd with 32mb cache. Would I see a good increase in performance? I heard I would with my Q6600. Are there still a lot of problems with Vista? All my other hardware I got for Christmas so it must all be Vista ready.

I'd say get a copy of Vista from a friend and install it in dual boot with XP. You don't need a key to install it, and you'll have thirty days to see if you want to buy a license.

I'd say if everything is working fine in XP, stick with XP. I'm using Vista and if it hadn't come preinstalled and I hadn't already set up most of the stuff I want set up, I'd have definitely gone with XP.

Aside from negative comments from others, i've been quite pleased with the performance of Vista. It does consume extra memory (compared to XP) but not by THAT much. And besides, the extra memory that it does consume isn't for nothing...it does help with performance indeed.

If you install the 32bit version of Vista (any flavour) you will, pretty much, have the same compatibility as XP. 64bit works brilliant as well, but some tinkering is required that alot of users wouldn't usually know how to do.

Install Vista (with SP1 recommended) and test it.

My personal settings, however, is to scrap Windows Defender, UAC and disable SuperFetch. SuperFetch is, technically, supposed to help but I didn't notice a significant improvement (as well as interference in games.....HDD constantly loading and indexing/caching).

I'm pleased with Vista.
