FWIW the last peep I had out of Microsoft was 1) that they're still working on WinFS and 2) that it's a 64-bit file system unlike the 32-bit NTFS ...

What about the current 64 bit Vista NTFS file system?

Look, it is nice that MS are communicating with the public and being "honest" about aspects of Vista that are quite visible to a decent amount of Vista users/testers.

But this also implies that they were fully aware of this, and if they considered this a 'test' phase, then why on earth have so many people pay ALOT of money to install an O/S that the company, itself, knows to have performance issues.....they couldn't have expected people to prefer the issues over the stability and performance of XP....did they?

NTFS, whichever version, is 32-bit.
