Wow, the tape player in my head started running on %90 of the titles I saw. I have no idea but it was a nice walk through 'Nostalgia Lane'. smilenod Considering the diverse nature of the music, I'd guess it was an engineer or producer.

Nope...the same group played on every single song. Only the singers were different.

OMG! omg I guess they didn't tour with the singers but that's quite an achievement for studio musicians. I'm really blown over by this!!!

EDIT: I see your post below now, I was just going from top to bottom.wink Jeez, the only two I recognize is Glen Campbell and Leon Russel.

Yup, pretty amazing, eh. None of them ever went on the road with the singers they backed up. A couple did play their own live shows (mainly jazz) and put out records but not playing the music above. In fact, it was a pretty well-kept secret since a lot of those artists were actually bands (like The Beach Boys) who toured live, so people assumed that the drummer, guitarist, bassist, etc. were also the ones who played on the records. Most people knew that The Monkees weren't a real band and that they didn't play on their own records but very few people knew about the others.

The list only includes a few big hits -- they actually played just about EVERY song on EVERY album by those bands. In most cases none of their names ever appeared on the albums.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. You never think about the band, but in the end - what would a song be without them? Some big hits on that list too. I never knew that.

It's truly amazing. Even The Beach Boys, who people think of as a band who made their own records.

Most of those guys are still alive. And they're not even all guys. Would you believe that the bass player on almost all these songs was a woman? She came up with so many famous licks.

On Monday I actually met and sat in on an interview with the drummer on most of these songs. It's amazing how I have the drums of these songs in my head all my life and there I am shaking his hand. One man played drums on almost all those songs. Amazing.

In most cases they didn't just play music that was handed to them. The writers of the songs just gave them the basic idea and they came up with the music. So what you hear is actually music that these guys created in the studio. Lots of the most famous riffs, licks, progressions, sounds, etc. were creations of these guys, not necessarily notes that were written on paper. They were hired because they had the ability to interpret what the writers intended.

P.S. John -- did you notice that they are the ones who did the Hawaii 5-O theme? They did a lot of TV shows. They did Mission: Impossible too. Imagine, I shook the hand of the guy who played the drums on Hawaii 5-O.

Those are only the songs which are actually in the movie, by the way. It's just the tip of the iceberg.

Well, first of all I never knew that about the Monkees. lol Second thought is, to save me time googling, if you know which jazz bands they went to? I listen to tons of jazz, never heard of any of them, yet. It would be nice to know.wink

They had their own. Hal Blaine, the drummer, for example:
