With all the money you guys probably make from all the ads, etc., surely you can get something better than phpBB? To be honest, even version 3 sucks. Difficult to use, lack of features, and as secure as a default install of Internet Explorer 6.

I'm really hoping that some time in the future you'd be willing to upgrade to something better, preferrably vBulletin. For something free, you could also try SMF which is really good.

I'm just saying. smile IMHO, phpBB is a no-no. anino

Please tell me what you think.

There's a good chance we're moving the entire system to Expression Engine. Not for the forum as much as the other capabilities it'll offer.

vBulletin is not a bad system but is way over priced for what it offers. There are free systems out there that offer much more with better support. Look at SMF for example, offers the same features as vBulletin (basically) and it is free. smilenod

I am not a fan of systems that require code hacking in order to achieve a result. anino Most forums out there and their mods require you to go into the core files in order to do what you want to do. There are systems out there, like EE, that does not require this. It allows you to use plugins, extensions, modules, and add-ons in order to do what you want by overriding the main function.

I will have to find the website, if it is still up, but it lists all of the basic/major features of almost all the forum systems out there and their price. Just allows you to find what is best for you.

PRO's really tried to do too much inside a forum environment. We were definitely forum-oriented for several years between 2001-2004, but after that we became a lot more news, blog, guides, and content focused. We have tried to use phpbb to do that kind of thing for way to long.

So there's a possibility we'll get an upgrade to something that's actually good? notworthy

I really don't think the existing forum is exactly "bad" per se. But yes, whatever we upgrade too will better facilitate the functions and goals of the organization.

Well, we were thinking about going to 3.0 but then we started looking at other options. Instead of making two different updates within a very short time frame; it is better to keep it to one.

This is a matter of data integrity.

Plus, all the updates we would have to do with 3.0 would lapse into when we are looking to transfer to a new system. smilenod

phpBB 3 is little better, but still crap. I really, really would advise we go with something like SMF, vBulletin, or something else. Anything!

Jbullard, you think that's overpriced? http://www.fusionbb.com/
